Around half of adults and adolescents in Indonesia suffered mild dehydration or the body of water shortage in light levels. Thus disclosed Hardiansyah Prof Ir Dr MS, Chairman of the Food Pergizi Indonesia, in his lecture at Symposium on Nutrition of Medical Doctors Association of Indonesia (PDGMI) "Hydration and Health" at Hotel Sahid Jaya, Jakarta, Sunday (21/3/2010).

This figure is derived from the Indonesian research Hydration Study (Thirst) is performed through laboratory examination of urine samples of 1200 in Jakarta, Lembang, Surabaya, Malang, Makassar, and Malino. In addition, research conducted collaboratively by the three universities, namely, FEMA IPB, UNAIR FKM and FKM UNHAS, it also noted that the incidence of mild dehydration in teens is higher compared with adults. In addition, mild dehydration events in low-lying areas of higher heat than in the cool highlands.

Trigger of this mild dehydration is ignorance and the general public difficulties in obtaining clean water or drinking water. Six out of ten respondents (60 percent) in the study also did not know that drinking water is needed more for pregnant and lactating mothers and for those who are in a cold environment.

Related research results are, Prof Dr Ir Hardiansyah, MS, has appealed to people not again underestimate the dehydration that occurs in their bodies. "Do not regard lightly the body of water shortage," he said. Just a little water shortage can cause various disturbances in the body.

Lack of 1 percent of body water can cause thirst and mood disorders; lack of body water 2 to 3 percent increase in body temperature, thirst, and stamina problems; lack of 4 percent body water can reduce the physical capacity to 25 percent, and a person can pass out if in body water content decreased to 7 percent.

Not only that, recent studies also indicate that the lack of fluid intake, especially water into the body, can increase the risk of diseases such as kidney stones, urinary tract infections, colon cancer and urinary tract, constipation, obesity in children and adolescents, hypertension and venous thromboembolism, coronary heart disease, stroke, brain blood vessels, salivary gland dysfunction, until the elderly health problems in general.
