They are at increased risk of mental illness are advised to consume fish oil supplements every day. Studies show that fish oil supplements are as effective as medication in reducing the risk or delay the mental illness like schizophrenia.

The experts involved in this research believe, omega-3 content in fish oil are good for heart health have the same benefits for the brain.

"These results prove, natural treatments can prevent or at least delay the emergence of psychiatric disorders. We hope that fish oil could be an alternative to pharmaceutical drugs for mental disorders," write the researchers in the journal Archieves of General Psychiatry.

Drugs to cope with psychotic mental disorders are effective, but has serious side effects, including effects of drug addiction. In contrast with fish oil supplements are more easily tolerated and easy to obtain.

In this study an international research team from Austria, Australia, and Switzerland to test fish oil supplementation in 81 patients at increased risk of psychotic mental disorders (various disorders). Those who are at high risk have a family history of schizophrenia or other mental illness or had shown mild psychiatric symptoms.

In this study half of the respondents were asked to consume fish oil supplements of about 1.2 grams per day for 12 weeks, while the remaining respondents dummy supplements. Each individual supplements were not told what they drink.

The researchers continued to follow the development of the health of respondents during the year to determine how much, if any, who suffered from psychiatric disorders. Two people from the group receiving fish oil supplements have psychiatric disorders, whereas the placebo group reached 11 people.
