A recent report published by research firm IDC shows that the smartphone market grew about 80 percent worldwide during the first quarter of this year 2011. The number of units distributed (shipping) reached 99.6 million in the last three months, up from 55.4 million in the same quarter last year.
Nokia is still ranked first with 24.3 percent of smartphone market share with 24.2 million units. This achievement was up from its market share in a business smartphone that only 21.5 percent a year ago.
In the second place there was a shift. Appe who was in second place beyond Reserach In Motion (RIM). Apple managed to distribute 18.7 million units of smartphones that 18.7 market share, up from 8.7 just last year.
RIM is actually an increase in unit volume of smartphones that shipped 13.9 million units, up from 10.6 million units a year ago. However, its market share fell from 19.1 percent the first quarter last year to 14 percent this year.
Samsung became producer of the most enjoyed growth of smartphones. How not didistribusikannya units rose from 2.4 million in the first quarter of 2010 to 10.8 million in the first quarter 2011 so that it can surpass HTC. This year HTC actually also experienced growth in the number of smartphone units released to the market, but lost to Samsung because it is only from 2.7 million to 8.9 million.
Among manufacturers, only three companies that experienced growth well above average. Samsung's highest with 350 percent growth, HTC 229.6 percent, 114.4 percent and Apple. RIM only grew 31.1 percent and Nokia 12.6 percent.
