The researchers are still figuring out what causes depression. Some experts said that depression occurs because of imbalance in brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. Antidepressant drugs usually work to balance these neurotransmitters.

Some experts believe depression in a person affected by genetic factors. If there is a history of family members, it becomes a big risk factor. Another factor that contributed was the health condition. Research shows people who have a history of heart attack risk 65 percent were depressed.

Another factor that can not be changed is the gender. Women two times more likely to experience depression. Hormonal changes that occur in the life cycle of women (menstruation, pregnancy, childbirth and menopause) take effect mentioned.
